The Highlands Expansion provides an exciting new adventure to the already powerful game of Talisman. I was suprised at the variety of adventure cards available in the new add-on and was extremely pleased to find that it did not conflict with the Dungeon Expansion, in that one can begin their adventure early-on in the Highlands and then move on to the Dungeon later. The only great disappointment was the Relic cards, whose abilities were onerous and frankly not too helpful unless you plan on fighting a Battle Royale at the end. One of the big bonuses to the Highlands was the ability to loiter in the expansion area without having to declare a retreat or only advance one way, allowing for mobility and player vs. player challenges on the death-defying craigs and walkways which plague the Highlands.
This expansion is a must-have for any hardcore or leisure Talisman adventurer and I would strongly recommend picking it up as soon as possible. (The character additions are awesome as well!)

At the time I am writing this there is only one review for this expansion and it is rather negative. I disagree with that view, so I thought I would add my own since I have written several Talisman reviews. I admit I am biased, as I love the game, but I think the previous poster may have had the wrong mind set.
All the pieces, board, cards, character cards, and figures are of the standard Very high quality produced by FFG for the Talisman line.
This is a very similar expansion in design and concept to the Dungeon Expansion. Basically it is a new board/region you can enter and traverse. It has its own cards and end boss. It is NOT the Dungeon Expansion, nor should it be thought to be. This board expansion attaches to the main Talisman board on the opposite corner to the Dungeon. This makes for a VERY large playing space. You may need one table for the board and smaller tv tables for the playes!
Similar to Dungeon the goal of this expansion is to get the the end of the board, defeat the boss and gain a magic relic. Then you complete the game as per usual. People complain that the magic relics at the end of this game are too weak, but the boss at the end of the game is only 66% as strong as the dungeon boss, so this fits. (The Dungeon Boss has a strength/craft of 12/12, the Eagle King has an 8/8) Also, there are only 4 relics to gain after defeating the boss, I admit there could have been more.
The adventure cards for Highland look similar to the standard set. They have added a new concept called "trinkets" which do not count against your number of items carried. Most seem to be traded for some benefit, gold, life, str, etc. A good addition to the game, although they do seem to be heavily gold oriented.
There are six new characters with the game, most have been reviewed on the FFG web site. At least 2 of them are exceptional; Vampiress and Alchemist.
There are three new alternate ending cards. They are all intended to be hidden, and are all good variations. I LOVE Alternate ending cards. to me Talisman is not Talisman unless you don't know what will happen at the end of the game. I feel there could have be more alternate ending cards included, and this is my one disapointment (Hence the 4 stars). Hopefully in the next expansion they will add 3 more new ones and they will throw in the few alternates they have published on the FFG site. It would be nice to have professionally printed copies of them.
Anyway, this expansion adds a new board region for the player to travel to. There are new cards, and some of the monsters are as strong as the end boss. It may not appear be as high levelled as the Dungeon expansion when you compare monsters and treasure, but this is still a good expansion. You could go into the Highlands to prepare for the Dungeon for example. Not everyone is ready to go in to the Dungeon knowing that the end boss is such a beast. The highland is easier, though the rewards are smaller. I like this expansion. I hope they make more soon.
WARNING: Playing Talisman with all expansions requires a big, BIG Table!

Short review: Other than 3 New ending cards and 6 new characters to use, This expansion is pretty much worthless. It is set up like the dungeon exp. but the relics are a lot worse. The spaces on the board are bland and it's not very exciting to use. A BIG BORE ALL AROUND. if you want to use an exp. set use the dungeon exp. I JUST HOPE FANTASY FLIGHT GAMES DOESN'T SCREW UP THE NEW RUNEBOUND EXP. COMING OUT IN JULY OF 2010
