4 out of 5 stars Fun game, but I changed the rules   July 13, 2010
Michael Ceciliani (New York City)
I bought this game on a competing website (sorry Amazon). Anyway, the game itself is structured well, act out an emotion in a given sentence. But I didn't like the voting process, so I changed the rules for that. I gave everyone a pad with 1st, 2nd and 3rd on it. After the person reads the phrase in the given mood, you write down three of the moods listed on the board (by their number). After the mood is revealed, you move according to where you placed the correct mood on your pad:

1st - move 3 spaces
2nd - move 2 spaces
3rd - move 1 space

The person acting out the mood moves one space for everyone that guessed it in any of the three positions. Of course, not guessing the mood at all does not advance you on the board. Players take turns acting out and guessing others' acting skills. First player to reach the Finish space wins.

Another twist my group tried was to replace the mood just acted out with another mood. This way there's a different mood acted out each time, with no repeats. There's 60 moods and 10 are showing at any given time, so it's possible to do this.

These changes made the game very enjoyable for me and my friends, and apparently I'm a better actor than I thought, ever though I didn't win. A fun game from Milton Bradley that's out of print, so you'll have to go on the internet to get it. The pieces you move on the board are nice and unique as well. I like them.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious!   June 16, 2010

Imagine jealously asking, "Was I snoring again?" Or picture your friend angerly stating that, "There's nothing sexier than a lawnmower!" It's all in the way you say it! Moods is an endlessly entertaining game never short of hysterical laughter. It is the perfect icebreaker for a party, and an even better game for the family. Witness sides of your friends and relatives you never thought you`d experience as they swallow their embarrassment and "get moody!" Turn a dull afternoon into one of uncontrollable laughing and fun! Entertainment doesn't get much better than this!

Moods is a game anyone can enjoy, from the casual game player to the most serious of game enthusiasts. It takes the emotions we all experience every day, from grouchy to excited, suspicious to flirtatious, angry to apologetic, and dishes them out with a twist: they are no longer in context. There are 60 moods, 120 phrases, and no telling what combination may be your next assignment. It's all in the luck of the draw and the roll of the dice. Your success hinges on your ability to help the other players guess what mood you are portraying.

I was first introduced to Moods by my family on Christmas day. My family is not extremely fond of strategic games as I am; they prefer the more "normal" games such as Yahtzhee, Monopoly, and Life, with an occasional game of Clue. I, on the other hand, am usually up for more complexity and strategy. Growing up, it was always difficult to convince family members to share that same desire. Although Moods does not have the complexity necessary to satisfy someone looking for such a challenge, it can still be thoroughly enjoyed by all. Its strengths lie in the interpersonal aspect--its hard not to have fun when playing this game! I will never forget what fun I had seeing my quiet, introverted dad come alive while playing this game. I never knew he could be so animated!

This game is a hit around our parts and loved by nearly everyone we introduce it to. If you are looking for a party game that will draw people together, this would be a wonderful choice. If you have older children (over 12) this would also be a marvelous choice for a family game. I highly recommend it for endless hours of entertainment and laughter! It's downright hilarious!

5 out of 5 stars Words and emotions don't always match   June 9, 2009

Too bad this game is not made anymore. It is a game based on people guessing what emotion you are portraying based on how you say given phrases. The results are outrageous and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Moods is an excellent, FUN, theraputic tool   February 11, 2008

I use Moods in therapy sessions with middle school and high school students with Asperger's or autism. Learning to look at others and gauge their emotions requires activation of mirror neurons. Very recent neuroscientific studies have shown students with these disorders don't have typical activation of these neurons, and I'm sure this is exactly what is stimulated when we play this game. This is exactly what people with social skills problems need. My kids use the skills of guessing others' emotions in situations very different from the game after playing. It's a great tool and it's FUN! Just be sure to edit the content of some of the cards before playing with kids!

5 out of 5 stars Family Fun   December 31, 2007

I bought this board game 4-5 years age when I was diagnosed with a spacial learning disorder where I had trouble reading facial expressions and tones of voices thinking that it might help me pick up on the subtle differences between things like tension and anger. After just a month of just playing with my family we became addicted to the game and they already started to notice that I was getting better at reading their facial expressions and moods. This game is great for a laugh at a party or for some good old fashioned family fun.
